Life was good for Carl McIntyre.
Happily married, with 3 young children, a successful career selling architectural products, and an established career as a respected stage and screen actor; Carl had everything going for him.
But everything changed in September of 2004 when his wife, Elizabeth, returned home and found him unconscious on the floor of their home. She called 911 and the McIntyre family’s journey into the unknown began.
Carl had suffered a massive stroke, severely damaging the language center of his brain and leaving him with the condition Broca’s Aphasia. Although cognitively intact, he was suddenly completely unable to speak, read, or write. Years of speech therapy ensued, along with nearly unbearable frustration, depression, and financial hardship as Carl, Elizabeth, and the entire family struggled to adapt to this new reality.
Slowly, Carl began to learn new ways to communicate through gestures, drawing, and eventually, a few regained spoken words. In spite of a dire prognosis, Carl and Elizabeth refused to accept defeat and tirelessly pursued any therapy that offered hope or clinical trial that would accept him into their program. This dedication began to pay off as Carl continued to recover language one word at a time.
In 2010, a group of Carl and Elizabeth’s friends banded together to give Carl the opportunity to tell his story through the short film, Aphasia. Production was swift and the film debuted at the 40th anniversary celebration of the UNC Chapel Hill Speech and Hearing Sciences department later that year. Since then, the film has screened hundreds of times at festivals, conferences, and fundraising events.
During production of the film, Carl began work on a motivational presentation. Since the film’s debut, Carl has traveled throughout the US, Canada, and Australia delivering his message of hope, determination, and purpose. Elizabeth often presents her story as well in these events.
Aphasia the movie is a poignant narrative that captures Carl’s courageous journey as he navigates the challenges of disability, grappling with feelings of anger and despair, ultimately striving to reclaim his voice and identity. The film shares the raw and honest moments of his struggle, offering viewers a glimpse into the resilience of the human spirit.
Carl McIntyre not only portrays himself but also serves as an inspiration to many who face similar adversities. His story is a testament to the power of determination and hope, illustrating how one can find a new normal even in the face of overwhelming odds. The film invites audiences to reflect on their own lives and the importance of communication, connection, and understanding in overcoming life’s challenges. It is a heartfelt reminder that, despite the obstacles, joy and fulfillment can still be achieved.

Available for rental now, this unique film is a must-see for anyone interested in stories of resilience and personal growth.
